Who am I? Why am I here? How shall human beings live? What is the nature of thought and action? What is the natural world? These perennial questions of philosophy have been pursued with rigor and excellence at Duquesne for its entire 125-year history.

Philosophy is at the heart of Duquesne's liberal arts education. Our undergraduate and graduate programs in philosophy guide students in philosophical thinking, both past and present, and provide a venue for asking and answering the basic questions of human life. Our courses concentrate both on contemporary continental philosophy and the history of philosophy.

Duquesne's Philosophy department has had a strong reputation in the interdisciplinary teaching of phenomenology and existentialism since the early 1950s. At that time, several scholars from the Netherlands and Belgium came to Duquesne: Bernard Boelen, Andrew van Melsen, and two Spiritan priests, Frs. Henry Koren and Englebert van Croonenberg. Later, Fr. Andre Schuwer joined the faculty. Since then, the Philosophy department has continued its commitment to providing resources and training for students interested in studying this rich tradition.
